Elderly people will be well looked after in Guildford this Christmas.

Guildford Borough Council is putting on a host of special activities at its social centres in Ash and Guildford over the festive period.

The Christmas meals, raffles and armchair exercises at the Park Barn and Shawfield centres can be enjoyed by anyone over the age of 55.

Lead Councillor for Housing and Social Welfare, Cllr Tony Rooth, said: "Caring for the elderly in our borough and ensuring we do as much as we can for their health and wellbeing is a year round concern for us.

"At this time of year, when families all join together, the health and wellbeing of elderly relatives is a particular worry for many, particularly through the winter.

"This is why we want people to be fully aware of the many services and opportunities that are available for older people in our borough."

The Park Barn Social Centre will be hosting the following events:

  • Thursday 24th December - mulled wine and mince pies at 10:30am, followed by musical quiz, armchair exercises, lunch and Christmas arts and crafts.
  • Wednesday 30th December - Wii Bowling at 10:30am, followed by arts and crafts, Christmas quiz, grocery raffle, lunch and bingo.
  • Thursday 31st December - New Year's quiz at 10:30am, followed by arts and crafts, jingle bells armchair exercises, lunch and golf.

People will also be able to enjoy a mince pie and coffee morning at Shawfield Social Centre on Thursday 24th December.

Both centres are open every week day throughout the year, where activities include scrabble club, team games on the Nintendo Wii, youth club for older people, tai chi, new age Kurling and crafts.

The centres also offer hairdressing, chiropody, health check clinics and have community wardens based on site.

Councillor Rooth, added: "We have an excellent team of dedicated staff at Park Barn and Shawfield Social Centres who do all they can to help older people enjoy their lives to the full."

"We also help people remain as independent as possible in their own homes with access to a support network of professionals and services if required.

"If you are elderly and want to know more about what's on offer, or if you have an elderly relative or neighbour who you think should be benefitting from our services, please do not hesitate to contact us.

"Don't wait, if you feel you need the help, contact us now."
