VIDEO: Major fire rips through church in Fleet

Fleet Fire

Published by the Eagle Radio News Team at 6:26pm 22nd June 2015. (Updated at 7:42am 23rd June 2015)

A major fire has ripped through a church in Fleet.

People living near the building on Church Road are being told to stay in doors for their safety.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen in the immediate area.

30 fire fighters, with five pumps, were at the scene.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue tells us it is not thought anybody has been hurt.

The smoke has filled nearby streets, with visibility severely reduced.

Gemma Raggett works in Fleet: "My eyes are stinging, all I could see was smoke from beyond the trees.

"You could hear the rubble falling, it was collapsing at a very quick speed. The building has collapsed.

"You could smell the smoke and there was ash falling on to us.

"The air felt warm and it was very smokey and it hurt my eyes."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue tells Eagle the roof of the church is completely gone but the bricks remain.

Reporter Liam Grace was at the scene: "There are police lines everywhere, there is smoke in the sky.

"There is thought to be very little left of the building. It is a very historical building.

"I can see fire engines everywhere, police cars everywhere and emergency crews."
