Expansion plans given go ahead at three North East Hampshire primary schools

News school crossing

6:02am 5th June 2015

Three North East Hampshire schools are earmarked for expansion as the County Council tries to boost school places.

It is pumping over 20 million pounds into seven projects across North Hampshire over the next year, to create 1,000 new school places.

It is all part of it's commitment to increase primary school capacity by 11,000 by 2018.

In our area three are getting made bigger, two in Hartley Wintney and one in Farnborough.

It says it has to deal with the school places issue because of rising birth rates, new housing developments and more families moving into the county.

It is part of a wider £248 million capital programme which has been set aside to make sure existing buildings are maintained in good condition, there is better provision for pupils with special educational needs and money is made available for other improvements on school sites.

The seven projects are:

Oakwood Infant School, Hartley Wintney - to be expanded to a three form entry school creating a total of 270 places at the school. As well as four new classrooms, the project, costing a total of £2.3 million, will also include a specialist teaching space and a group work room

Greenfields Junior School, Hartley Wintney - to be expanded to a three form entry school, taking the capacity to 360 places. Four new classrooms will be built at a cost of £2.2 million

Tower Hill Primary School, Farnborough - to be expanded from a one form entry school to two form entry, taking the school's capacity to 420 school places. As well as six new classrooms, other new facilities will include a multi-purpose teaching space and a special educational needs room. The total cost of the project is £3.2 million

Great Binfields Primary School, Basingstoke - to be expanded from one form entry to two form entry increasing its capacity to 420 school places. As well as providing six new classrooms the works will include a new learning resource centre and new shared group spaces at a total cost of £3.8 million

Marnel Community Infant and Junior Schools, Basingstoke - both to be expanded from three form entry to four form entry creating a total of 360 places at the infant school and 480 places at the junior school. As well as new classrooms, a new community room will be provided at the infant school along with a new resource area. The junior school will also benefit from two group working rooms within one of the new extensions. The total cost of the project is around £3.6 million

Hook Infant and Junior Schools - both schools will be expanded to four form entry creating a total of 360 places at the infant school and 420 at the junior school. As well as new classrooms the infant school will have improvements to its main entrance and hall, while the junior school will have a new main entrance and reception area. The total works cost £4.9 million

Commenting on the projects Councillor Peter Edgar, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Education, said:

"Hampshire has a strong track record of planning and for providing high quality teaching and learning spaces for pupils and their teachers.

"We want all children to have the best possible start to their education. In 2015/16 alone around £23 million will be invested, across the county, in new schools and school expansions to increase capacity in the coming years.

"Having a highly-skilled in-house property team, with a long track-record of designing award-winning school buildings and landscapes, means that we can design top-quality learning areas, use innovative thinking to make the most of the available space, and yet still make the money go a very long way. These projects are part of that investment and will meet the ever increasing demand for school places."
