WATCH: Hook mum helps keep children safe online through gaming app

Online safety 2

6:00am 27th April 2015

A unique online safety app is set to be rolled out across schools in Surrey.

Gooseberry Planet is a game, which teaches children about the dangers of the internet.

It is the first of its kind and has been created by a mum in Hook.

Stella James says it will encourage parents to have an open chat with their children about any concerns they might have.

Stella said: "60% of 11-18 year old's have been asked for a sexual image.

"Those are the things that really scare me as a mum, for my eight-year-old and my 13-year-old.

"I was at another school and there was a very, very explicit video that was released that was sent to a girl, it wasn't her, but it was of a gentleman.

"It's just not nice.

"So there's things happening all the time, all the way around us.

"We really need to educate our children on these things."

Stella has this advice for any parents: "When you're talking to the children, pretend as though it's like a stranger danger situation.

"It works in exactly the same way as you would walk up to somebody on the street as it does online."
