New words added to official Scrabble list

New words added to official Scrabble list

Published at 11:08am 2nd May 2019.

Dictionary publisher Collins has added a whopping 2,862 officially accepted words in its update, the first since 2015.

Gender-focused words such as 'transperson' and 'ze', used to refer to someone who does not define themselves as either male or female, make the list.

Slang words 'fleek,' used to mean someone on trend or stylish, and 'bae' meaning loved one are included.

Collins looked at terms from Australia, Canada, South Africa, the US and the UK and included words based on trends and usage like 'anti-vaxxer.' and 'matcha' which is a Japanese Green tea!

No surprise to see the political term 'remainer' included and with an increasing number of people turning vegan 'aquafaba', a replacement for egg whites, is also included.

TWO LETTER WORDS:

The inclusion of two letter words like 'Ok', 'Ew' and 'Ze' are unlikely to impress purists.

It's a controversial choice among players, as according to the official rules, it should not be allowed due to being both capitalised and an abbreviation.
