Fiver parties - would you send your child to one?

Birtday presents

Fiver Parties - are you in favour or against?

  • Latest birthday party craze among parents is the Fiver Party.
  • It's where mums and dads ask for a £5 in a birthday card instead of gift for their son or daughter.
  • The idea is they can then put it towards something they want.
  • Is it a good move or bad?

There's a birthday party trend doing the rounds called 'Fiver Parties'.

Fiver parties are children’s birthday parties at which, instead of spending hours searching for a present they may or may not like, parents are asking other mums and dads to simply stick a fiver in a card.

The idea is that the birthday child gets to spend a good bit of the money on something that they really want or save it, and parents aren’t left with a pile of toys that the child doesn’t even want or worse still duplicate presents.

For some parents, many welcome the so-called 'fiver parties' stating it's a good way of teaching kids to enjoy get-togethers, putting the emphasis on people instead of gifts.

Others call a move like this forward, cheeky, presumptuous and tacky. And some people just don’t feel comfortable handing over money.

Eagle Radio asked Wharfedale and Craven Mumbler what it thinks of Fiver Parties - it's in FAVOUR of them.

Sarah Smith Wharfedale and Craven Mumbler said:

"When my kids are invited to parties I have always imposed a £10 maximum spend when it comes to the presents. If you think about it if they are in a class of 30 and are invited to the party of every child, which is often the case in the first few years at school, that's £300 a YEAR!

"Yes as they get older they are invited to fewer parties but then the older the child gets the more expensive the decent presents are.

"Realistically what can you buy these days for £10 or less? Nothing decent which is going to stand the test of time (or the test of a 6-year-old boy!!). I love the sound of the FIVER party and I would be more than happy to attend one and contribute to a more expensive present the child has requested. At least there is no duplication in gifts and the child gets something they actually want! Oh, and it saves me time trawling the shops looking for the "perfect" gift!"
