Surrey Is UK Spider Hotspot: Why Are There So Many?

Why are there so many spiders in my house?

Published at 11:43am 14th September 2018. (Updated at 12:38pm 27th November 2018)

You may have noticed a surge in spider sightings in your house in recent weeks. Well, now we know why are there so many spiders around this September.

Why are there so many spiders in my house?

The main reason why are there so many spiders in your house is we are now into the mating season, meaning male spiders are much more active as they hunt for a mate. As the weather is cooler and wetter this September, giant house spiders up to 12cm long will emerge!

The second reason why are there so many spiders in your house is that Surrey is apparently a hotspot for spiders 🕷

What types of spiders are in my house?

The Surrey Wildlife Trust says there are more than 400 types of spiders in Surrey and for some, it is the only place you can find them in the UK 🕸

"It's not the best news for the county's arachnophobes perhaps," concedes Mike Waite from SWT, "but spiders are undoubtedly fascinating creatures!"

"We believe certain declining species of spider are now pretty much confined to Surrey - these include the Great fox spider, the Lynx spider and certain types of Sac spider and Comb-footed spider.

"But there is still much to be learned about the distribution and status of spiders in Surrey and new sightings or records are always welcome."

How to get rid of spiders in my house?

    • Spiders are repelled by strong scents 👃 Peppermint oil is a popular scent, you can add it to a spray water bottle and spritz the rooms where spiders usually hide.
    • Get de-cluttering 📚 Spiders like to hide in corners and crevices so if you have a lot of times piling up in a room have a declutter and a tidy up.
    • Citrus 🍋 Spiders dislike citrus scents, you could try rubbing lemon peel on skirting boards or use lemon scented candles and furniture polish.
    • Conkers 🌰 Yes you've probably heard this one. Many homeowners swear this works so why not give it a try. Do be careful if you're a pet owner as chestnuts can be poisonous when eaten.

What types of spiders are common in Surrey?

According to the Surrey Wildlife Trust, here are the top five spider species to spot in Surrey this Autumn:

1⃣  Wasp Spider - striking yellow and black striped spider with a large body. The female has a horrible habit of eating her mate!

2⃣ Raft Spider - a large striped spider that can walk on water, dive and even swim. Voracious hunter - may eat tadpoles and bite if handled!

3⃣ Gorilla Jumper - scary-looking, hairy, black jumping spider, with all-round vision. Found on damp heaths such as Whitmoor and Wisley Commons. Don't be alarmed - it's pretty small!

4⃣ Wolf Spider - hunts on the ground, chasing down its prey and leaping on it, just like a wolf! Female carries young on her back after they've hatched.

5⃣ Triangle Spider - this rare spider is named after its unusual triangular shaped web. Found in the Trust's Wallis Wood reserve and on Box Hill.
