Hummingbird Bakery permanently closed in Guildford

Published at 4:52pm 7th August 2018. (Updated at 12:24pm 27th November 2018)

The Hummingbird Bakery's Guildford branch is now closed with immediate effect.

A statement from the company says the store was not making enough money.

The American style bakery opened in the town back in August 2017 with crowds queueing outside their door.

On Tuesday (August 7) it  announced on twitter it was shutting permanently.

Founder and Managing Director, Tarek Malouf said, “The Guildford bakery was our first branch to open outside of London and it is with sadness that we have taken the decision to close it.

"I’m proud of all the wonderful work our bakers have delivered during their time baking for this welcoming community and I offer my sincerest thanks to all of our Guildford customers for joining us on our American baking journey.

"As a business that has been London-based since 2004, we quickly realised that our model of baking fresh on site requires a level of revenue that we have been unable to reach in this area.

"We remain committed to our six London bakeries and international franchise and will continue to seek out further suitable opportunities for UK expansion in areas that will best support our business.

"It is our hope that Guildford customers will still be able to enjoy fresh American baking at our Richmond bakery located on The Quadrant in Surrey.”

Staff affected by the closure of the Guildford branch have been offered optional relocation to other branches across London, including in Notting Hill, South Kensington, Soho, Spitalfields, Islington and Richmond.

The company said customers who have already placed orders with them will be contacted - and it thanked all shoppers for their support.
