Best Of Surrey And Hampshire In 2017

Random Acts Of Kindness

Published at 3:57pm 12th December 2017.

We've been out and about a lot in 2017 so, as it nears December 31st, we wanted to countdown our favourite events, listeners and memories from the year.

1. Local Heroes Awards

September saw our annual Local Heroes Awards at G Live in Guildford, along with live music from Fuzz Universe, Maria Coyne, and headliner JP Cooper. The winners and their stories at this year's Local Heroes Awards were absolutely remarkable and it makes us proud to be part of such a wonderful community!

Watch all of our winner's stories here

Special Award - Team Freddie: Mark, Bonnie, Emma and Debbie have been the team behind fundraising for Yateley's Freddie Hunt as he battles a brain tumour at just 2 years old. The team have managed to raise a staggering £470,000.

Sports Award - Lucy Pygott and Stacey Burrows: Lucy and Stacey were two hugely promising athletic stars in our community tragically taken too soon. Lord Sebastian Coe joins us and their parents for a truly deserved celebration of their sporting achievements.

2. Random Acts of Kindness

Throughout February, we went out in Surrey and Hampshire to surprise you with Random Acts of Kindness. Adam Morris took the treats to your work for elevenses, Morning Matt took your dog for walkies with Winston and Lewis brought out the romance with beautiful red roses!

We even managed to get PG to wash a few cars...

3. Local Radio Day

Local Radio Day was on Friday the 26th May. Across the day we celebrated the unique service Eagle Radio provides to the community and gave you the chance to win £1000. We were also at The Pepperpot in Godalming with Jack Luke Mason, the busking social media sensation and Kim Robson was live from the Phyllis Tuckwell shop in Aldershot.

4. Charity Of The Year

In January we shortlisted six deserving charities in Surrey and Hampshire, and asked you to vote for the one that you think should be Eagle Radio’s Charity of the Year.  You chose The Orchard Centre, with a mammoth 6583 votes. Here's how we've been helping them..

Building A New Sensory Room: While the clients were on a day out, our team went into The Orchard Dementia Centre and made them a brand new sensory room. They were very surprised!

Patsy and the Steel Pans: Patsy has dementia, the only thing that makes her happy is music especially steel pans. See the moment Brighton Hill Community College joined us to surprise her

5. Matt's Dates

Morning Matt hadn't been on a first date in 5 years... So his fellow presenters PG and Bev decided to set him up on three real blind dates.

Watch what happened on Matt's Dates here

6. Race For Life

Race for Life this year was incredible... and we were there every step of the way. From Epsom to Guildford, Kempton Park to Pretty Muddy; you ran, jogged, got muddy and got fundraising for Cancer Research UK.

Here's what happened in Stoke Park in Guildford.

8. Get Jack Back

When Aldershot's Jack Luke Mason got sent home from the XFactor's judge's houses we banded together and took him on a voting tour of Surrey and Hampshire and you came out in your droves!

9. Pug Cafe

You may have heard the new trend in novelty Pop Up Cafes springing up around the country; we've seen cereal, cats and one that sells only crisps. However, this year saw the opening of the eagerly awaited Pop Up Pug Cafe and it was right on odoorsteptep here in Guildford.

You can read more about the Cafe here.

10. Lewis' Lights

Once again, Lewis switched on listener's Christmas lights across Surrey and Hampshire this December. We visited 5 homes, turned on the lights and brought the party to your living room... all on a school night!
