Top young runners fight to get England kit

Two teenage runners from Hampshire are campaigning to get their England kit, after an international event was cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak.

James Dargan, from Yateley, and Daniel Shattock, from Hartley Wintney, finished last weekend's English Schools' Cross Country Championships in positions fourth and sixth out of 334 runners.

The top eight finishers are automatically selected to represent England in a Schools' International Athletics Board competition.

But, this weekend's event had to be cancelled because of the virus.

It meant none of the boys were running for their country and so did not get any kit, which James said is in line with a rule by the English Schools' Athletic Board.

However, the top eight Junior Boys have now teamed up to take action as they feel it is "unfair" that they will not get the kit as they "can't physically compete in the event", according to 14-year-old James.

James' mum Lisa Dargan told Eagle Radio she "understands that the Irish team have their kit and have been told that the Scottish team having been given their kit and told to keep it".

She added:

"James has just heard that the Welsh team have been given their full kit so it is only the England team who haven’t!

"A number of parents, including myself,  offered to pay but so far, no response."

James continued:

"It would mean an awful lot because we have all worked really hard to get where we were.

"That was the event that our entire seasons had been based towards and for the last two years.

"So it's just disappointing at the end that we didn't get anything to show for our efforts."

The English Schools' Athletic Association has not yet responded to Eagle Radio's request for a comment.
