Teen slapped with £300 bill after dropping cigarettes in Farnborough and Fleet

Published at 11:46am 25th October 2019.

A teenager has been fined after being caught dropping two cigarette butts within the space of an hour.

Sharp-eyed enforcement officers spotted the infringements in Farnborough and Fleet back in January.

The 19-year-old, who twice dropped the ends of his ciggies and walked away, then gave a false name and address.

Victoria Road, Farnborough
He was first caught littering in Victoria Road, Farnborough just before 12.30pm on 31 January.

Ending up in court after being tracked down by Rushmoor Borough Council corporate investigators, the teen was handed a £300 bill.

He admitted four offences, two of dropping litter and two of giving a false or inaccurate name or address.

At Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court last week (17 October) he was fined £150.

In addition he was ordered to pay £120 towards the council’s costs and a victim surcharge of £30.

Fleet Road, Fleet
Just 53 minutes later the teen dropped another cigarette butt in Fleet Road, Fleet.

What if I'm caught dropping a cigarette?

Rushmoor Borough Council has been using enforcement officers from East Hampshire Commercial Services Limited, since February 2018.

The council says they are running a "zero-tolerance campaign on littering" and issuing fixed penalty notices of £75 to anyone witnessed dropping litter.
