Inside the Fleet shop which creates 'zero waste'

Published at 6:00am 10th March 2019. (Updated at 11:30am 12th March 2019)

Fleet Scoop is a community minded zero waste shop aimed at bringing plastic free products to the town and highlight how we can cut down.

Started by local mum and primary school teacher Kate Cottrell, she hopes it will help people change their habits and in turn reduce the impact retail has on the environment.

She said:

"We are trying to limit the amount of single use plastic, but actually packaging in general.

"So we sell lots of bulk foods and people bring their own container to fill-up or we have glass jars which they can fill-up instead.

"We also have non-food products, so things that are reusable like Jedz bottles, things like shampoo bars and produce bags - all manner of things that are reusable to prevent things going into landfill."

She says waste is kept to a minimum and anything from their suppliers which currently isn't produced without plastic sees packaging reused to avoid it being a single use item.

On how we can reduce our own waste, Kate said:

"My biggest piece of advice is to do it one thing at a time - don't overwhelm yourself by thinking that you have to automatically turn plastic free - one change at a time is the best way forward.

"Those kind of throwaway products which we are producing thousands of per person in a lifetime and are so unnecessary are very, very easy swaps."
