Hartley Wintney cricket green targeted for second time

Published at 2:50pm 17th December 2018.

The Cricket Green in Hartley Wintney has been damaged for a second time after being driven on in the middle of the night.

On Monday (10 December) locals were woken by an engine revving loudly in the early hours, before daylight revealed deep tyre tracks in the outfield.

After a major effort by members of Hartley Wintey Cricket Club to repair the turf, further damage took place around 48 hours later.

The vehicle involved is believed to be a 4 x 4 with yellow rather than white headlights, possibly silver in colour.

It is thought the second incident took place between midnight and 6:00am on Wednesday (12 December),.

Although no vehicle was seen on that occasion, the tyre tracks left were similar to the first incident.

Inspector Olga Venner said:

"This is the second incident of damage on the cricket ground this week.

"A vehicle making a lot of noise in the middle of the night is likely to have attracted someone’s attention and we are keen to hear from anyone who has spotted any suspicious activity.

“We have increased our patrols in the area and would ask that anyone with CCTV that may assist us, reviews any footage and contacts us if they spot the vehicle described."

Following the second incident the Hartley Wintey Cricket Club thanked those who had got involved in efforts to repair the damage.

The club said:

"A big thank you to everyone for their support following the damage to the green this week, it has rejuvenated some faith in our humanity and the wonderful community we live in.

"I understand there must have been the best part of 20 people armed with spades and shovels...fantastic response.

"Once again, a huge thank you for all your kind words of support and to those have made the effort to come down and help the Groundhogs."

If anyone has any information about either incident you are asked to call Hampshire Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 44180459565.
