Yateley youth centre opens after 30 years of campaigning

Published at 6:01am 14th April 2018.

After a campaign that has lasted 30 years, Yateley now has a dedicated youth centre.

The space is based at The Tythings and aims to offer nights every weekday ranging from sport and fitness to drama and music.

A public open day is taking place today (14 April) between 1-4pm to showcase what will be on offer.

One of the driving forces behind making the centre happen is winner of Eagle Radio’s 2016 local hero volunteering award, Graham Foxwell of Vision 4 Youth.

On finally getting a dedicated space for youth in Yateley, he said: “There’s a story from a local councillor, who said that a young lad came up to him 30 years ago and asked for a youth club and that was me.

“It’s really important, we’ve been asking for it for a long time. It now enables us to do a lot more, so we will run the Friday night club as per usual, drop in club, but we plan something every day of the week.”

Vision 4 Youth have been running services in Yateley for 18 years, explaining why he’s been involved for so long Graham said: “The reason why I do this myself is I grew up here in Yateley.

“I was a nice kid, but I was difficult and used to roam the streets just like some of the kids in Yateley and get into trouble.

“I think it was because of a particular youth club that was running at the time and particular guy that was running that youth club took an interest in me and believed in me that I am here today.

“I don’t think I would be here today if it wasn’t for that youth club and those people running that club at the time, so I want to offer that to the young people in this area.

“And it’s not just Yateley, its Yateley, Darby Green, Blackwater, Eversley, so it’s a wider area that we reach out to.”
