Leisure centres and gyms can officially reopen in Surrey and Hampshire today (25 Saturday),

However, because of social distancing, they may look a little different compared to the last time we were there.

Not every facility will be opening today though, some leisure centres in our area have not yet confirmed when they will welcome back customers,

Eagle Radio spoke to Barney Harrison, Chief Commercial Officer of the Gym Group which has facilities in Farnborough and Guildford:

"It's an exciting day for our members and our colleagues

"We've really focused our efforts in three key areas: first capacity management so making sure we don't fill the gyms up too much.

"We're using our entry and exit portals to count people in and out and members can use our app to see how busy the gym is.

"We also have enhanced cleaning measurements to lots of cleaning stations and antibacterial hang gel we're asking people to do their bit and clean their kit.

"Finally social distancing, we've organised the equipment so people can maintain a two-metre distance."

New measures that have been introduced at the Gym Group:

  • Reduced opening hours-the gyms will not be open 24/7 for the time being to ensure the building and equipment is clean and safe for the following day
  • Temporary restriction of classes- classes will be done online
  • Some equipment will not be in use
  • Some equipment has been moved to allow for social distancing
  • Limited numbers- only a certain number of people will be allowed into the gym at one time, members are asked to try and avoid 'peak times'
  • Cleaning- the gyms will provide cleaning equipment and hand sanitiser for members to use as they enter the gym, and to clean the equipment after use

Woking Leisure Centre, reopening: 25th July

  • All activities, including the gym, racquet sports and outdoor 3G football pitches, must now be pre-booked and, in some cases, are time-limited
  • To support Test and Trace visitors will be asked to provide their contact details upon arrival.
  • Enhanced hygiene measures will be in place, with cleaning between each session and hand sanitizer stations located around the building

The reopening date for Cranleigh Leisure Centre, The Edge, Farnham Leisure Centre, Godalming Leisure Centre, Haslemere Leisure Centre is yet to be confirmed.

No date has been given  yet for Aldershot Pools and Fitness Centre, Farnborough Bowl or Farnborough Leisure Centre either,

Ash Manor Leisure Centre will open next Saturday (1 Aug).

A Waverley Borough Council spokesperson told Eagle Radio:

"We are working closely with Places Leisure, who manage our centres, to confirm reopening dates.

"Once these dates have been agreed and safety measures are in place, Places Leisure will be in contact with customers with further details."

The Places Leisure website states:

"We welcome the Government’s decision to allow indoor gyms and leisure facilities to re-open.

"There is still however much work to be done as we put new measures in place including new signage to ensure we all respect social distancing, smaller class sizes, and hand sanitising and cleaning stations.

"So, while we can’t give you a definitive date for reopening just yet, rest assured we’re working really hard alongside local authorities and other partners to get everything ready."
