Surrey teacher publishes children's book to explain social distancing at school

A Surrey teacher has published a book to help explain to children what it is going to be like to be back in the classroom during the coronavirus outbreak. 

Kezia Matthews from Shere Infant and Nursery School wrote and illustrated Coming to School in a Bubble as a way of describing social distancing measures. 

It is freely available for anyone to use, including other schools. 

As some children return to school this week many may be confused as to why they cannot spend time with their friends. 

Mrs Matthews' book explains what 'being in a bubble' means for pupils: 

"A bubble is just a small group of people who will spend time together at school. 

"You can think of them as a team. 

"It will include some of your friends and one or two grown-ups you will already know from school. 

"You might not have all of your friends in your bubble, but you will have some of them.

"Your bubble will do all of their activities together you will sing together, relax together, work together, create together, eat together and play together."

In line with the latest government announcement, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils in England have been heading into classrooms since 1 June in the first step of a phased reopening.

The Government has said that although full social distancing (remaining two metres apart) "may not be possible" for children of primary school age, they have set out measures to protect children and staff.

According to the GOV.UK website, these include:

  • Reducing the size of classes and keeping children in small groups without mixing with others. There should be no more than 15 pupils per small group, one teacher and a teaching assistant, if needed.
  • Staggered break and lunchtimes, as well as drop-offs and pickups
  • Increasing the frequency of cleaning, reducing the used of shared items and utilising outdoor space.
