Guildford rail lines closed this weekend

Published at 11:52am 15th May 2020.

Most rail services in Guildford will not be running this weekend, with nearly all lines closed for maintenance work.

The works are a follow-up to major improvements made back in Easter, when the lines were shut for ten days.

They included 1,500m of renewed track, 1,200m of conductor rail, upgrades to 41 track circuits, strengthening the rockface and embankment around St Catherine's Tunnel, and painting the overbridge at Guildford station.

The only line staying open on Saturday (16 May) and Sunday (17 May) is platform 1 and the route via Effingham Junction.

The following South Western Railway services have been amended:

Saturday 16 May:

  • One train an hour will be diverted between Woking and Portsmouth, calling at Fareham. Long distance passengers should use these trains where possible to avoid the buses.
  • Other trains on the route between London Waterloo and Portsmouth via Haslemere will call at Surbiton instead of Woking and then run as far as Guildford. Trains will run to a revised timetable.
  • Buses will run between Woking, Guildford and Haslemere. Passengers from and to London Waterloo should use trains to and from Guildford to connect with the buses.
  • A revised train service will run between Haslemere and Portsmouth.
  • Trains between London Waterloo and Guildford via Cobham will only run between London Waterloo and Effingham Junction. Passengers will have to use other train services between Effingham Junction and Guildford.
  • Other services to and from Guildford via Effingham Junction will run with minor retimings.
  • The train service between Guildford and Farnham will not run.
  • Buses will run between Guildford and Aldershot. Passengers need to use other train services between Aldershot and Farnham

Sunday 17 May:

  • Trains between London Waterloo and Portsmouth via Haslemere will call at Surbiton instead of Woking and then run as far as Guildford.
  • Other services to and from Guildford via Effingham Junction will run with minor retimings.
  • Stopping services between London Waterloo and Guildford via Woking will be replaced by buses between Woking and Guildford.
  • Buses will run between Woking, Guildford and Haslemere. Passengers from London Waterloo should use trains to and from Guildford to connect with the buses.
  • A revised train service will run between Haslemere and Portsmouth.
  • Buses will run between Ascot, Aldershot and Guildford.
  • The extra late afternoon and evening fast services to and from Portsmouth will be diverted between Woking and Fratton.
  • Long distance passengers from London Waterloo and Woking to Portsmouth should use trains between London Waterloo and Portsmouth via Eastleigh/Fareham to avoid the buses.

Great Western Railway services and CrossCountry services could also be affected - so check before you travel.
