Surrey-based brain injury charity appeal as coronavirus hits funding

Published at 6:00am 14th May 2020.

A charity supporting adults with brain injuries in Surrey says it has had around half of its fundraising income slashed due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Headway Surrey is appealing for funds after events were cancelled since the start of lockdown last month on 23 March - resulting in a £100,000 loss.

It has closed its Guildford day centre in North Road for the time being, and has switched to offering remote services.

Brain injury survivors can also access support through daily or weekly telephone calls and one-to-one video calls.

The charity is also offering social activities including quizzes, activity packs, virtual coffee mornings, and art classes.

Sonja Freebody, Headway Surrey's Chief Executive, said:

"At Headway Surrey, we know just how complex and life-changing the effects of a brain injury can be, so it's of critical importance that we're on hand to support our service users in any way possible.

"Through remote and virtual support, we're working hard to minimise the effects of isolation that could be so destructive to the wellbeing of our service users."

Sonja said the charity has been hard hit financially by the coronavirus crisis - and she is appealing for support:

"The financial impact of the coronavirus cannot be understated.

"We lost approximately 50% of our fundraising income overnight, which in turn has the potential to cause disruption to our services now and long into the future.

"We need your support now more than ever before.

"We're asking people across the county not to forget about the charities working tirelessly through these unprecedented times."
