Coronavirus: Death toll in Surrey hospitals rises to eight

Eight patients who were being treated at Surrey hospitals have now died after testing positive for COVID-19.

It comes after the Royal Surrey confirmed on Saturday (21 March) that a third patient had died at the hospital.

Louise Stead, the Chief Executive at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, said:

"Sadly, we can confirm that one of our patients being cared for at Royal Surrey County Hospital, and who had tested positive for COVID-19, has died.

“The patient was aged 89 years-old and had underlying health conditions.

“Their family have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”

The number of deaths at Surrey hospitals related to coronavirus:

  • Royal Surrey Hospital: 3
  • Epsom Hospital: 3
  • East Surrey Hospital: 1 
  • Frimley Park Hospital: 1

There have now been 281 confirmed deaths in the UK of people who were diagnosed with Covid-19.

5,683 people have tested positive across the country with 135 people now recovered. 

Confirmed cases in our two counties as of today (23 March) are 68 in Surrey and 156 in Hampshire.
