Road and station closures in Guildford over Christmas period

Published at 1:01pm 23rd December 2019. (Updated at 1:19pm 23rd December 2019)

Farnham Road and Guildford Station are closing during the Christmas period through to New Year's Eve so that Network Rail can carry out bridge strengthening work.

The station will be shut from 11pm on Christmas Eve to 4am on December 31, with no trains serving it, and Farnham Road will be shut from 12am on December 25 to 5am on December 30.

The work, by Network Rail, is to repair, refurbish and strengthen the overbridge which spans six tracks to the south of Guildford train station.

Between December 27 and December 30, engineers will be improving track drainage and strengthening the overbridge by repairing its brick and steelwork.

Between December 25 and December 30, the bridge will only be open to pedestrians whilst cleaning, painting, repairs and strengthening works are carried out.

Surrey County Council describes the work as "crucial" and says if it is not carried out, the bridge will eventually become too weak to sustain the high level of traffic passing over it.

The work is funded by Network Rail and Surrey County Council.

As the strike will still be in place, there will be a limited number of South Western Railway services to Guildford via Cobham and Stoke D'Abernon.

Buses will replace trains between both Woking and Haslemere and Guildford and Farnham, with passengers travelling to Portsmouth can connect at Haslemere for a train.

CrossCountry trains from Newcastle will only go as far as Reading.

Great Western Railway services between Reading and Gatwick Airport will run between Reading and Ash only, with buses replacing services between North Camp and Guildford/Gatwick Airport.

There will be a rail replacement bus service in place from Guildford station.

Guildford station car park will have reduced capacity during this phase of the work.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time to find alternative parking if the station car park is full.

Other car parks in the area are:

  • Farnham Road car park  - Farnham Road, Guildford, GU2 7NP
  • Bedford Road car park - Guildford, GU1 4SJ

Network Rail can be contacted via their website 24-hour helpline on 03457 11 41 41, quoting "information request - Farnham Road overbridge".
