Rock legend Eric Clapton makes surprise appearance at G Live in Guildford

Published at 2:12pm 27th November 2019.

Eric Clapton surprised an audience at Guildford's G Live on Monday night (25 November) after making a secret appearance on stage.

Ripley born Clapton joined the band Hawkwind for three songs, who were performing as part of their 50th Anniversary tour.

Having been through many personnel changes over the decades, the only remaining founder member, Dave Brock, has a long history of performing with friend Eric.

As younger men, they regularly played together as a duo in folk pubs, clubs and coffeehouses across Surrey.

Clapton stepped on stage ahead of one of Hawkwind’s biggest hits, Silver Machine.

He stayed on stage to perform an acoustic version of Hurry on Sundown with Brock, before the band's climax with The Watcher.

G Live Director, Derek Aldridge, said: “While we are no stranger to welcoming rock and roll royalty to Guildford, tonight’s top secret appearance by Eric Clapton was surely one that has to go down in the history books as one of the defining appearances of G Live’s first decade."

This isn’t the first time Eric has appeared on the G Live stage, following a special guest appearance as part of Paul Jones and Friends a couple of years ago.
