"No indication" that Guildford weir was at risk of collapse

Published at 2:17pm 8th November 2019.

Investigations are continuing into why a footbridge fell into the River Wey in Guildford last weekend.

The Borough Council says it appears the weir and adjacent abutments collapsed, triggering the footbridge to give way while a pregnant woman was on it.

In a statement they added "there was no indication that the bridge (or weir) were at risk of collapse".

Work is now taking place to install a temporary coffer dam to reinstate river levels.

The council added it was "too early to say how long the repair programme will take".

A spokesperson for the council said:

"We are working closely with the National Trust and we have engaged a specialist contractor and plan to start setting up for temporary works on today.

"Once our contractor and partners have assessed the full extent of the damage, we will have a better idea of timescales.

"The work will depend on weather conditions (i.e. we will have to stop work if the river floods)."
