Final decision on Guildford GP surgery faced with closure due next week

Published at 3:54pm 23rd August 2019.

The more than 2,500 registered patients at Burpham's New Inn Surgery will find out next week if the London Road based practice will close.

On Wednesday (28 August) the final decision about its future will be made at an extraordinary meeting of the NHS Guildford and Waverley CCG's Primary Care Commissioning Committee.

The practice has been facing the threat of closure since it emerged that the lease of the site where the surgery is based is due to expire, with no agreement reached for an extension or an alternative.

Now a group of patients have launched a petition to keep it open.

A statement on the petition said:

"The idea that some 2,500 patients will merely be "dispersed" to other practices in the community is not practical.

"Patients of New Inn Surgery do not wish to move practices.

"Burpham needs New Inn Surgery, Guildford needs New Inn Surgery."

NHS Guildford and Waverley CCG said:

“The lease for the premises occupied by New Inn Practice is expiring and unfortunately, despite a lot of hard work, the practice has been unable to agree a long-term arrangement with their current landlord.

“Unfortunately, having considered all the options available it is likely that the surgery may have to close later this year.

“It is important to note the closure is not something that the surgery wants, and the utmost effort has been made by the surgery to find a new location.

“The CCG is committed to ensuring we maintain primary care facilities for all patients.

"If it is agreed that the surgery does need to close, the CCG will work with other local GP practices to make sure that all patients are able to register with a new practice.”

Currently patients are being advised that they do not need to re-register with another GP practice and the surgery will continue to provide services to patients as normal until a decision is made.
