Travellers descend on residential green in Guildford

Published at 8:09am 18th July 2019. (Updated at 10:06am 18th July 2019)

A large group of travellers has taken over a green in a residential area of Guildford.

Police were seen in the area after  more than 30 caravans and vehicles descended on Bellfields Green in Hazel Avenue off Woking Road yesterday evening.

Residents report seeing livestock on the site, including a pony that was not tied up, chickens in cages, a cockerel, and dogs.

Guildford Borough Council have issued a statement saying they are trying to sort out the situation:

"“We are aware of the traveller encampment at Bellfields, and are in the process of doing all we can, as quickly as possible to resolve the issue.”

The residents association has been in discussion with locals about putting up barriers around the Green to restrict vehicle access.

The Guildford Borough Council consultation outlined a plan including fencing, trees in combination with timber bollards and a knee rail.

A vote was due in by May 19 with people having to decide which style barrier they wanted.

The majority of respondents were in favour of some sort of boundary (72%) although not fencing.

No barriers have been erected at this stage.
