Travellers pitch up at Guildford Spectrum following Pirbright eviction

Published at 9:39am 5th July 2019. (Updated at 1:43pm 5th July 2019)

A group of travellers has pitched up on land next to Guildford Spectrum after being ordered to leave another site in the borough.

Police issued the order following reports of two separate assaults after the group arrived at a field in Pirbright yesterday afternoon (4 June).

A man, wanted in relation to a number of traffic offences, was also arrested at the site and is in custody.

Shortly after leaving the area in Pirbright the group of around 10 caravans and other vehicles arrived in Guildford, setting up an encampment on land next to the A25, Parkway.

In a statement Surrey Police said:

“An order under Section 61 has been served on an unauthorised encampment which moved onto a field in Pirbright earlier today (4 July).

“The order, directing the group to leave, was served by officers within two hours of the group’s arrival and they left the area shortly afterwards.

“The order was served after we received two reports of separate assaults after the group entered the land at 3.17pm.

“Enquiries into these reports, as well as a report of criminal damage at the site, remain ongoing.

“A man, wanted in relation to a number of traffic offences, was arrested at the site and is in custody.

“However, we received further reports around 6.50pm that the unauthorised encampment had moved to the Spectrum Leisure Complex in Parkway, Guildford.

“We have made Guildford Borough Council, which owns the land, aware and we will continue to monitor the impact of the camp.

“At this stage, we have not been made aware that any criminal offences have been committed.”
