"Long live live music" - Star Inn noise abatement notice quashed

Published at 1:48pm 1st July 2019. (Updated at 2:44pm 1st July 2019)

A popular live music venue in Guildford has been saved after a judge quashed a Noise Abatement notice.

The future of the Star Inn, as a live music venue, was under threat after Guildford Borough Council served the notice last year.

The owners of the pub, Shepherd Naeme, said they would challenge the notice and a hearing began at Guildford Magistrates Court last Monday (June 24).

Back in October, they said:

"Having sought legal opinion from counsel we believe there are sufficient grounds to launch an appeal in the hope of ensuring the restoration of the Back Room at the Star to its full use as a live music venue.

"We would also like to thank Guildford Borough Council leader Paul Spooner for his continued support for the Star and appreciate his efforts on its behalf."

Today at Guildford Magistrates Court, a district judge ruled the abatement notice had been quashed.

Following the hearing, a post on the Star Inn's Facebook Page read:

"We won! Thank you all for your continued support, long live live music!!!!"

Speaking after the verdict, Shepherd Neame Property and Services Director George Barnes said:

“This is excellent news, common sense has prevailed. We would like to thank the many thousands of people who have supported our fight to save the Star as a live music venue and helped preserve a vital part of the cultural landscape of Guildford and the South East.”
