Guildford among first places in UK to get new 5G network

Published at 5:16pm 14th May 2019.

Guildford will be one of the first places in the UK to benefit from Vodafone's new 5G service.

The new, super-fast mobile technology is expected to be available in the town by the end of 2019.

Seven major cities, including London and Manchester, will get it first at the start of July.

It'll then be rolled out to 12 other locations including Guildford.

Vodafone is the first operator to name an official switch-on date for it's new service and is set to launch 5G roaming in four European countries this summer, including in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain.

In the UK Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London will receive 5G first.

The "super-fast, highly responsive mobile technology" will then be available in Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton later this year.

Making the announcement Vodafone UK CEO Nick Jeffery said:

“We upgraded our masts to be able to take 5G without disruption. And we were the first UK company to test 5G over our all-fibre core fixed and mobile network.

“This is important. It means we can today announce the largest launch of 5G in the UK and be the first to announce 5G roaming.

"It means consumers can get the fastest mobile speeds ever, and it means that our public sector will be able to adopt new services to improve healthcare, social services and housing.”
