Guildford woman who lost her sight takes on London Marathon

Published at 6:00am 28th April 2019.

A Guildford woman is raising money for the Royal National Institute of Blind People two years on from losing her sight after contracting E.coli.

Lizzi fell ill in 2017 and was diagnosed with a serious blood disorder, Hemolytic-uremic syndrome, which then caused multi-organ failure including her heart, kidneys and entire respiratory tract.

After falling into a coma for two months she woke up and found that she had lost her sight.

Having taught herself to walk again after being bedbound, Lizzi explains her decision to run the London Marathon:

"After three months in the hospital with organ failure and other problems, I decided to raise some money and take on a new challenge proving anything's possible.

"Definitely two years ago when I was lying in bed no one thought I’d get here but I have and I have so much support that I can give back to people by finishing and of course raising the money.

"Reaching that finish line would some it all up.

"The past two years I’ve had to get back on my feet and adapt to a different lifestyle, it would just be that fairy tale ending."

Having been given the go-ahead by doctors, Lizzie will run alongside her running partner Millie (pictured above, right).
