Developers ordered to remove nets from Guildford trees

Published at 5:42pm 11th March 2019. (Updated at 5:43pm 11th March 2019)

Guildford Borough Council has ordered developers to remove nets covering 11 trees in Walnut Tree Close following outcry on social media.

People on Twitter described them as "cruel", "shameful" and "wicked", with claims they were put up to stop birds nesting.

They covered trees at a site along the River Wey which doesn't currently have planning permission.

Having seen the images go viral, Guildford Borough Council Leader Paul Spooner said he was "seriously unimpressed" on Saturday before tweeting to say he would look into it on Monday.

A spokesperson for Guildford Borough Council says the local authority has since liaised with the developer, claiming the act was not anything to do with the council.

Following the talks, the developer has agreed to remove all the nets within the next 48 hours.
