Council taking legal action over travellers in Burpham

Published at 3:23pm 1st February 2019.

Guildford Borough Council say they are going to take further legal action over an unauthorised traveller encampment in Burpham.

A group of around seven caravans and other vehicles pitched up at Sutherland Memorial Park on Wednesday evening (30 January).

The council say they were made aware of the encampment and carried out a welfare check yesterday morning (31 January), before serving them a notice to leave - which has been ignored.

In a statement the council said:

"We are aware of the traveller encampment at Sutherland Memorial Park, and are in the process of doing all we can, as quickly as possible and working with the Police to resolve the issue.

"The travellers at Sutherland Memorial Park, who arrived on Wednesday evening (30 January), were served with a notice to leave yesterday (31 January). We will now take further legal action.

"A welfare check was carried out yesterday morning. We will continue to monitor the encampment and work with the police."
