The Stranglers return to Guildford's Star Inn 45 years after first performance

Published at 2:15pm 31st January 2019.

Punk rock band The Stranglers have today returned to the Guildford pub where it all began.

Formed in 1974 the group, originally known as the Guildford Stranglers, played their first gig at the Star Inn in Quarry Street at the bottom of the High Street.

Today (31 January) the band were back at the venue, which has had an uncertain future since it was served a noise abatement notice last year.

As part of a PRS Heritage Award, a plaque was unveiled commemorating both the Star Inn and The Stranglers first performance at the venue 45 years ago.

Speaking outside the Star Inn, PRS Chairman Nigel Elderton said:

"Today we're here to, really to do two things. One, to honour a fantastic iconic venue, the Star Inn, which has helped young bands for many, many years to hone their craft and grow from small beginnings to major international acts like The Stranglers.

"Of course along with that goes a fantastic history and iconography of a fantastic band."

It is understood the band are performing an acoustic set at the venue this afternoon.
