Reindeer at Guildford Christmas Lights switch-on cancelled

The reindeer at Guildford's Christmas lights switch-on event have been cancelled. 

Experience Guildford has announced the decision for Thursday's event has been made following a recent animal protection report. 

"We applaud the work of Animal Aid in their quest to safeguard animals in captivity in the UK. Since learning the outcome of their 12-month investigation yesterday, we will no longer support captive reindeer events.", a statement reads.

"We hope that you understand the decision that has been made and we apologise for any disappointment caused."

The event, will take place on Thursday (November 15) and still includes a programme of entertainment to be enjoyed throughout the day. 

Live music will be underway at the Experience Guildford Stage, Guildford Fringe Buskers Corner, in Tunsgate Quarter Shopping Centre and other parts of the town.

There will also be an #ElfieSelfie photo booth which will be in place from 3pm – 6pm at the rotunda, followed by performances from The Salvation Army and Rock Choir.

The balcony show will take place from the Guildhall at 6pm, where Eagle Radio's Peter Gordon will host a number of guests including the stars of the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre panto, Cinderella.

The lights will be switched on at 7pm, followed by a dazzling fireworks display sponsored by White Lion Walk shopping centre.
