Here's why the Stoke Crossroads were out

Published at 5:01pm 18th October 2018. (Updated at 5:23pm 18th October 2018)

Surrey County Council has confirmed what was wrong with the Stoke Crossroads traffic lights as they finally return after days of travel mayhem across Guildford.

The lights had been out of operation since the early hours of Tuesday (16 October) morning, meaning commuters faced two rush-hours with no traffic signals at one of the town's busiest junctions.

Following the installation of temporary lights, Guildford then became plagued by heavy traffic and lengthy tail backs.

Now the council have confirmed the suspicions of a site engineer who spoke to Eagle on Tuesday, that it was caused by cabling issue.

The delay in fixing the issue was blamed on difficulties in locating the specific problem area.

A spokesperson for Surrey County Council said: "It was some damaged cables which proved difficult to track down, and some components damaged by a power surge which also needed to be replaced."

During evening rush-hour on Tuesday a car hit the barriers in a collision while the lights were out.
