Fears the end is near for music at the Star Inn

The future of a live music venue in Guildford hangs in the balance if a dispute about noise cannot be resolved.

The Star Inn in Quarry Street in the town centre has told Eagle it is worried about whether it is the end of live entertainment for the historic pub.

It comes after it received a noise abatement notice from the Council following complaints about amplified noise levels after a developer turned an adjoining building into flats.

A developer converted adjoining offices into flats.

The Star Inn has until early December to reduce levels of amplified sound.

But manager Georgina Baker told us it could signal the end of years of entertainment at the historic pub.

"People have been meeting here and holding entertainment here for 400 years so it's a real impact on the culture of the town centre as a whole.

"We are looking at losing out on theatre performances. This is a hugely broad spectrum of entertainment we have here and it's a huge community resource."

She said it is not possible to provide live entertainment, from bands to theatre, to comedy nights, without amplified sound.

It comes after the leader of Guildford council said he's being investigated for showing support for the pub.

Councillor Paul Spooner said the Council is looking into a complaint of 'bias' but he told Eagle he stands by his decision to back the Star Inn.

Eagle Radio has contacted the developer for a comment.
