Council leader 'under investigation' for supporting Star Inn

Published at 5:39pm 17th October 2018. (Updated at 5:27pm 18th October 2018)

The Leader of Guildford Borough Council says he is under investigation after showing his support for the Star Inn.

It follows the council serving the pub a noise abatement notice, which it says threatens to 'kill off' the business as it effectively ceases to be a music venue.

Cllr Paul Spooner claims a complaint that he was biased towards the pub is now being looked into by the council.

Since the news of the Star Inn being served the abatement notice a petition calling on the pub to continue as a music venue has received more than 21,000 signatures.

In a statement cllr Spooner said:

"I am very disappointed that Officers at Guildford Borough Council have now issued a noise abatement notice to the operators of the Star Inn, Guildford.

"My position remains unchanged. I strongly believe that it is absurd that the law allows for a centuries old live music venue to be under pressure due to recent permitted development nearby.

"That said, I have to accept that Officers are following due process. I am reassured that the Lead Member for Licensing is doing all he can to resolve the situation.

"I do take issue with the statement from the Star Inn that I have been silent on the issue since May. Both the Leader of the Opposition and I visited the Star Inn and anyone that follows me on Social Media will be aware of the supportive comments from me towards the Star Inn.

"I am currently under investigation by the Council following a complaint that I was ‘biased’ towards the Star Inn.

"As that has been accepted as worthy of investigation by the Monitoring Officer I struggle to see that I have been anything less than supportive of live music in Guildford."

Cllr Spooner added that despite the investigation he will continue to work towards keeping the Star Inn a live music venue and that all parties need to get around the same table.

Guildford Borough Council have been contacted for comment but are yet to respond.
