Council "working to fix the problem" at Stoke Crossroads

The failed traffic lights at Guildford's Stoke Crossroads caused heavy tailbacks this morning, despite the council putting in temporary lights to "keep traffic moving".

Since early yesterday the lights at one of the town's busiest junctions have not been in operation, resulting in a collision as well as several other scrapes and near misses as drivers tackled rush-hour with no traffic signals.

Surrey County Council says it is working to fix the problem, but it is not currently clear how long that will take.

A council spokesperson said: "We’re on site working to fix the problem but in the meantime we’ve put in temporary lights for safety reasons and to try and keep traffic moving."

Whilst the council confirmed yesterday lunchtime it would be arranging for temporary lights to be installed as they investigated the problem, they did not arrive for the evening rush-hour.

The council said this was because it is "a complicated junction" so it "took a bit of time to set up".

An engineer on site told Eagle he believes it could be a cabling issue caused by the ongoing works to improve the crossings at the junction.
