Teddy bears stolen from Guildford toy shop

Published at 3:38pm 2nd October 2018. (Updated at 9:19am 3rd October 2018)

Thieves have smashed their way into a Guildford toy shop.

The Bear Garden, along Jeffries Passage, was broken into at around 9pm on Monday night (October 1).

Surrey Police say six to eight teddy bears, valued at a total of around £300, were taken from a display.

It is believed a brick was used to smash the front window.

Owner Andrew Colborne-Baber said: "We opened in 1992 and have never been broken into. So it was a shock to get a call on Monday evening to say exactly that had happened."

"At about 9.30pm someone took a half brick and smashed it through our shop window.

"They then helped themselves to several teddy bears out of the window, before disappearing, we think, on a bike. It has been a bit of a shock, especially since it was carried out relatively early in the evening".

Andrew added: "This is the first time that the small business has experienced this sort of event in 26 years.

"The one positive that we have taken from this is the huge display of support from our customers. We have been inundated with messages, so I would like to pass my thanks on to everyone for their kind words".

The shop had to be boarded up for the night and it's reported parts will need redecorating.

Posting on their Facebook page, The Bear Garden said: "Obviously premeditated, as here is the offending brick. Don't find many of those lying around Jeffries Passage..."

A comment posted underneath a photo of the damage read "Replacement piece of glass is £2,000 +VAT..."
