Shoppers have been evacuated from stores inside Guildford's Friary Centre, following torrential downpours.

Heavy rain has been falling across the area this afternoon (August 10), following extensive periods of hot sunshine throughout July and the start of August.

The showers have also been affecting roads in Guildford, with a number underwater.

Videos and images have been shared on social media of the shopping centre, with shoppers describing the downpours as "flash floods".

Our reporter at the scene who is inside the shopping centre says a number of stores are still open, but some remain closed as water was coming through the ceiling.

Shoppers had to evacuated from stores due to the flooding.

In a statement the Friary Centre said: "The centre remains open and is trading as normal. We ask everyone to proceed with caution while in and around the Friary due to current weather conditions.

"While the centre and most retailers remain open as usual, we would ask you check with individual stores to ensure they are operating normally.

"The safety and security of everyone at the centre is always our first priority and we are working hard to ensure that all areas continue to remain safe."
