Published at 7:17pm 14th July 2018. (Updated at 12:32pm 15th July 2018)

A woman's body was recovered from the River Wey at Millmead Lock in Guildford today (14th July 2018).

The area was cordoned off as police and fire crews were called to the scene just before 9am this morning.

Surrey Police say the death is being treated as unexplained, and the woman's family have been informed.

They are appealing for information from anyone who may have been in or around Millmead Lock between 8.00am and 9.00am this morning, that may have seen the woman before she entered the water.

Officers are particularly keen to find a witness described as a woman in her 50's, who was sat on a bench nearby.

She left in the direction of Debenhams through the car park before the police arrived.

Police urgently want to speak to this witness, to obtain further information about how the woman came to be in the water.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Surrey Police immediately on 101, quoting 45180075013.

Or you can share information anonymously with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
