Guildford MP says she'll "push for action" to remove Shalford travellers

Published at 10:39am 11th July 2018. (Updated at 11:11am 11th July 2018)

Anne Milton, Guildford’s MP, has said she will "push for action" to remove the travellers in Shalford.

They recently pitched up on Shalford Common, but after being evicted - they moved just one mile down the road to Shalford Park.

A number of other locations have also been subject to illegal encampments.

Anne Milton said: “Whilst this matter is the responsibility of Guildford Borough Council (GBC) to deal with, I am also taking this up with the relevant people at the highest levels - both locally and nationally. “

Anne also recently received the following update from Guildford Borough Council:

‘We have received the Court Order under S78 to remove the travellers from Shalford Common and are serving the order on the travellers at present.  This requires the travellers to leave by tomorrow am, after which we will take enforcement action.  Site clear up operations will start after the travellers have left site.’

Anne has also written to the Minister at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to highlight local concerns about a series of similar incidents in and around Guildford over the last few months.

She added:

“Both the Council and Surrey Police are doing everything they can to deal with this situation, but they only have limited powers.  I will continue to push for action and will be keeping in touch with constituents at every stage as this develops.”
