Guildford family business face 'worrying times' following new parking charges

Published at 6:35am 10th July 2018.

The introduction of parking charges at Newland's Corner has left some local businesses with concerns over their future.

The charges, introduced yesterday (July 9), mean that visitors could face paying up to £5 to park for three or more hours.

Daniel Hunt owns Newland's Corner cafe, a business that has been run by his family since the 1970s.

Mr. Hunt fears that the new charges will deter people from visiting the area and has already seen a decline in customers.

He explained this time of year is usually their busiest and prepares them for the winter but trade has been "very, very quiet" since charges were introduced.

Now, he sees an "uncertain future" not just for him but for his staff and customers.

He said: "I'm seeing how it goes initially but it's worrying times."

He added: "The refurbishment of the toilets and also all the paths and just a general tidying up of the area were always promised before any car parking charges were introduced.

"But, no, that's not happened and it's not likely to happen in the near future either."

Surrey County Council say some other Countryside Estate parks will follow suit.

These car parks are at Chobham Common, Norbury Park, Ockham Common, Whitmoor Common and Rodborough Common.

Speaking last year, Surrey County Council said: "This is about confirming the changes that are part of our plans to improve facilities and provide a better experience for all while also contributing to our ultimate aim of ensuring countryside sites become self-sufficient due to huge strain on our budgets from rising demand for services, especially adult social care, and we expect a decision within a month or two."

Charges are as follows:

20 minutes free
1 hour - £1.30
2 hours - £2.60
2-3 hours - £3.90
3 hours + £5
£6 per visit for a Minibus or Horse-box/trailer (where no height barrier).
