Parking charges introduced at Newlands Corner

Parking charges at Guildford beauty spot Newlands Corner are being introduced from today (July 9).

Surrey County Council say some other Countryside Estate car parks will follow shortly afterwards.

These car parks are at Chobham Common, Norbury Park, Ockham Common, Whitmoor Common and Rodborough Common.

Dates have not yet been confirmed.

In 2016, the council had nearly 1,500 objections to plans for the parking meters:

1 hour - £1.30
2 hours - £2.60
2-3 hours - £3.90
3 hours + £5
£6 per visit for a Minibus or Horse-box/trailer (where no height barrier).

Newlands Corner

Sally Blake from the Save Newlands Corner Campaign Group was one of those against the idea last year.

She claimed they do not want the area spoiled by a visitor attraction people have to pay for: "Just the parking machines by themselves will change the look and the character and the affordability.

"In my view, and in an awful lot of other people's views, it should stay the same - everyone can (currently) afford to go there."

Back then, Surrey County Council said: "This is about confirming the changes that are part of our plans to improve facilities and provide a better experience for all while also contributing to our ultimate aim of ensuring countryside sites become self-sufficient due to huge strain on our budgets from rising demand for services, especially adult social care, and we expect a decision within a month or two."
