Objections to Guildford Harbour Hotel's planned 'penthouse'

Published at 7:10pm 7th June 2018. (Updated at 8:15am 8th June 2018)

Neighbours have raised objections to a Guildford hotel planning to build a penthouse.

Harbour Hotel has put forward a proposal to construct a two-storey two-bedroom apartment on the 3rd and 4th floor of the building in Alexandra Terrace.

But residents living nearby fear this will impact on the natural light.

More than 30 objections have been raised against the designs.

One resident said occupants would be able to look directly into his house and there was a significant “sun blocking effect” especially in the winter months.

Also objecting to the application was Miranda Bright who said: “There has been very strong objection from neighbours in both Dene Road and Eastgate Gardens for several reasons.

“There are concerns that the development will block out sunlight particularly in the winter months when the sun is lower in the sky and the trees have shed their leaves.

“It also opens up the prospect that if the left hand side of the north-facing elevation is granted planning permission that it will open the pathway to do the same on the right hand side, which has already over dominated some of the properties in Eastgate Gardens.”

Amendments to the plans have been submitted including a privacy screen between the apartment and neighbouring flat.

In its submission to the council the hotel stated that the design would not impact the streetscene of the Town Centre Conservation Area adding it was a “considerable distance from neighbouring propertiy such that no harmful or material overlooking will arise and no loss of light will occur”.

The plans will be discussed by Guildford Borough Council on Wednesday, June 20.
