Tunsgate footpath replacement to be complete by June

Work to 'improve the surrounding area' of Tunsgate will be complete by June, according to Guildford Borough Council.

The footpaths behind the town's Tunsgate Arch are being replaced with Yorkstone paving and granite kerbs, creating a pedestrianised area near to the castle.

It is hoped the project will enhance the town's appeal as a key shopping location, shortly after the opening of the redeveloped Tunsgate Quarter.

Cllr Matt Furniss, Lead Councillor for Infrastructure and Governance at Guildford Borough Council, who are jointly funding it with Surrey County Council, said: "We want a vibrant and thriving town centre and this is just one part of our vision to regenerate and improve what Guildford has to offer.

"The improvements will create a larger attractive pedestrianised area close to Tunsgate and the Castle. This makes it easier to walk around this historic part of our town and provides a more cosmopolitan feel with opportunity for al fresco dining.

"Replacing the Tunsgate footpaths with Yorkstone paving and granite kerbs and renewing the road surface with granite setts has visually uplifted the whole area."

Kier are the main contractor for the project, with an estimated completion date set for 29 June.

The construction group were behind the relaying of Guildford High Street's granite setts in 2016.
