A Guildford teacher enters the second round tonight of Britain's Best Home Cook - the tv cooking contest judged by none other than Mary Berry!

Philip Friend, who teaches Maths at St Catherine's School in Bramley, is one of eight contestants being put through their paces on the show.

We spoke to him on the Peter Gordon Breakfast Show earlier and asked him how he got to be on it: "I love to push myself with my cooking, and when this opportunity arose - they were looking for applicants last summer - I just lept at the chance, and I thought I've just got to do it."

He told us the judges are hugely encouraging and is especially taken with Mary: "Words just can't do her justice.

"She was amazing, as were Chris and Dan.

"To cook for all three - for any of them - would be beyond a dream, but to cook for all three - that's just amazing!"

Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, ten of the nation's best home cooks go head-to-head in front of judges Mary Berry, Dan Doherty and Chris Bavin. An accompanying book with recipes by Jordan Bourke has also since been released.

You can see Philip on the show airing on BBC one tonight at 8pm.
