Guildford lights up blue for World Autism Day

Published at 9:00am 2nd April 2018. (Updated at 8:07pm 2nd April 2018)

Guildford is celebrating World Autism Day today (April 2) by lighting up some of the town's key landmarks in blue.

Guildford Castle, The Friary Shopping Centre and the Yvonne Arnaud are all lit up.

It is to help raise awareness, understanding and acceptance of Autism which is thought to affect 700,000 people in the UK.

Steve Morgan is a fundraiser at the Jigsaw Trust in Cranleigh, which supports people living with the condition. He said: "We've heard from parents particularly who are judged for being "bad parents" perhaps because if their child appears to be having bad behaviour whereas in fact they have Autism, that's just their way of reacting, especially out in public.

We're finding increasingly that people have heard of Autism but  they don't necessarily know what Autism is, so anything we can do to raise awareness about how it affects people can only be a good thing."

The National Autistic Society's website says "Without understanding, autistic people and families are at risk of being isolated and developing mental health problems." and 34% of children on the autistic spectrum say the worst thing about being at school is being picked on.

The Eagle Radio website has also turned blue to show support.
