Major disruption on South Western Railway

Major disruption on South Western Railway

Published at 9:38am 21st March 2018. (Updated at 2:13pm 21st March 2018)

Commuters face major disruption on the trains - after services were suspended on parts of South Western Railway.

A set of problems across the network led to cancellations and delays during the morning rush hour.

Portsmouth to Woking, Alton to Woking and Guildford to Ascot were affected.

Services are being reintroduced with lines reopening, but there is a knock-on effect of residual delays - and some services are cancelled altogether.

At the start of the morning rush a track fault at Aldershot led to suspended services.

A fault with equipment in the signal box at Woking also caused disruption. The operator says that has now been resolved.

There was also an earlier signalling problem at Clapham Junction which has now been fixed.

Meanwhile, a signal failure at Staines caused disruption to services from Reading, Weybridge and Windsor to London Waterloo.

That has now been resolved.

Lines are being reopened and the operator says trains will run as normal on this route.

There is currently a train detection systems problem at Havant affecting services to and from the South Coast, on South Western Railway, Southern and Great Western Railway.

It is apparently caused by an attempted theft of signalling cables.

South Western Railway has announced changes to the Portsmouth Harbour/Waterloo service, including:

-A limited service will run between Portsmouth Harbour and London Waterloo.
-A limited service will run between Haslemere and London Waterloo.

It says their customer information systems have been turned off at stations between Petersfield and Portsmouth, because they are showing incorrect information. It advises passengers to listen to announcements or speak to station staff.

People can use their tickets on:

- GWR services between Portsmouth Harbour and Salisbury, and between Guildford and Reading stations.
- First Bus routes 1, 3, X4, X5, 7 and 8 in the Portsmouth area.

If you hold a car park season ticket for a South Western Railway station, you can use this at any other SWR station apart from Southampton Airport Parkway or Haslemere.

Details of alterations to individual services can be found here.
