Revamped Tunsgate opens in Guildford

Published at 8:36am 15th March 2018. (Updated at 3:13pm 15th March 2018)

It is a big day for shoppers in Guildford as the redeveloped Tunsgate Quarter opens for business.

With 80,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, the shopping centre features 18 units with views overlooking Guildford Castle.

This morning's ribbon-cutting ceremony comes nearly three months after the opening was initially scheduled.

Not all shops are ready for today - but retailers in place already include  OKA, The White Company, Bobbi Brown, Loaf, Cath Kidston and Lululemon.

They join the existing TM Lewin on the High Street.

By mid-Spring The Ivy Castle View will join them.

Nespresso will also open a 'Boutique' concept store in May.

Developers Queensberry have said several other brands will be joining them over the following months.

Commercial Director and Co-Founder of Queensberry, Stuart Harris, told Eagle why the centre was not yet full let: "We wanted to make sure also that we'd got the right mix.

"So we could have just filled the spaces, but it's important that we've got the right brands, because we're looking at this being sustainable in the long term.

Guildford Borough Council Leader Paul Spooner said: "We have to be realistic don’t we, and in the retail environment that we’re in at the moment.

“I think that they’ve achieved 85 per cent already in terms of let, the shops will be opening, or significant numbers of shops will be opening, from now through the coming weeks.

“What we want of course is to continue with Guildford being a destination, rather than just a local retail experience and I think that we will achieve that ambition.”

There are also be 14 residential flats above Tunsgate Quarter.
