Major police incident in Elstead in missing man search

Published at 3:26pm 9th February 2018. (Updated at 5:20pm 9th February 2018)

Police have descended on an area of Elstead, in the search for a missing person.

Up to 10 police cars and helicopters can be seen in the area.

It follows the discovery of an abandoned white van at the bottom of Fulbrook Lane this morning.

The River Wey is also being searched by a police diver, just behind The Mill.

Officers have advised residents that there is no danger but are searching for a missing man.

Surrey Police tell us they were assisting officers from Hampshire Constabulary in the operation.

A local resident told Eagle when he was first alerted to the incident: "It was around about 5.30am that my neighbour reported to me that a van was acting suspiciously.

"Because there have been lots of van break-ins in Elstead and the surrounding area, I decided to go down and investigate."

"I got in a car and went down there and found an abandoned Transit Van with its side lights on, on the junction of Fulbrook Lane and I dialled 101.

"At 10.00am, a number of police officers descended on the area looking for a missing person."

A large police cordon has also been placed around the river, behind The Mill.

Officers have been carrying out searches at the Woolpack, Thundry Meadows and the Hampton Estate.
