Guildford's Tunsgate Quarter to open in March

Published at 6:32pm 6th February 2018. (Updated at 10:21am 7th February 2018)

Guildford's revamped Tunsgate Quarter will open on Thursday 15 March, developers Queensberry have announced.

With 80,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, it will feature 18 units with views overlooking Guildford Castle.

Only six retailers will be open for business on the 15th though, they are OKA, The White Company, Bobbi Brown, Loaf, Cath Kidston and lululemon. They will join the existing TM Lewin on High Street.

By mid-Spring The IVY Castle View will join them, before Nespresso who will open a 'Boutique' concept store in May.

Queensberry says several other brands will be joining them over the following months.

The launch date comes nearly three months after the initial opening date was set.

In August, Queensberry said it had been pushed back so that it could be finished to the "highest specification".

Today (6 February), Commercial Director and Co-Founder of Queensberry, Stuart Harris told Eagle a problem with asbestos had also contributed to delays: "There's been a number of challengers, mainly the level of asbestos that we found on site.

"Clearly with something like asbestos we need to treat it seriously and make sure that it's all cleared before we finish other aspects of the development, which has led to a delay."

The official launch day in March will commence with a special opening event for customers.

Visitors will be be able to take advantage of a host of exclusive offers, promotions and entertainment, continuing into the weekend.

Mr Harris added: "We've been very particular in the type of tenant mix that we wanted to create here.

"Rather than just fill the space with almost anyone, we've been very particular in making sure we collate the right mix.

"It'll give a renewed sense of confidence to the town in sense of its retail offer.

"Guildford is in a good place to attract more people into the town."

There will also be 14 residential flats above Tunsgate Quarter, this is the balcony view from one of them.
